With the arrival of August began the 10-day heat wave, the longest in this year, with temperatures above 40 degrees. During the previous similar wave in July, electricity consumption in Serbia increased by 20 percent, water consumption up to six times. Farmers are afraid for yield because the drought goes on too long.

While the authorities urge the resources to be spent rationally, the news has come that the environmental debt has been shifted from the end of September to the beginning of August – this means that humanity is currently using resources 1.7 times faster than ecosystems can regenerate.

Worldwide, experts have recorded twice more drought in just one year, compared to the past decade. This certainly has already influenced the cultivation of different agricultural crops, the presence of viruses characteristic of the tropical regions, and eventually the migration of the people.

Are climate change really far from us, how much change our everyday life, and can we influence them? In the “Povodom” section, Dr. Olivera Glumac Bebic from the Novi Sad Institute for Emergency Medical Aid speaks to Dr. Branislava Lalic, associate professor of meteorology at the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad.
